1 pound ground beef 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.5 ounces) 1 cup milk 1 1⁄2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 small onion, chopped 2 tablespoons butter (optional)
