Description

Cheesy Potatoes Au Gratin is the ultimate comfort food side dish with layers of tender Yukon Gold potatoes baked in a rich and creamy cheese sauce. Perfect for holidays or cozy dinners, this gratin recipe is simple, delicious, and unforgettable.

Ingredients

2 ½ pounds Yukon Gold potatoes

1 ½ cups heavy cream

1 cup whole milk

2 cloves garlic, minced

3 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded (optional)

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.

2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes to about 1/8 inch thick. A mandoline is helpful for uniform slices.

3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and sauté minced garlic until fragrant.

4. Stir in flour to create a roux. Cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly.

5. Gradually whisk in milk and heavy cream. Cook until thickened.

6. Add cheddar and Gruyère cheese (if using), then season with salt and pepper. Stir until melted and smooth.

7. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the cheese sauce over.

8. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.

9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

10. Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until top is golden and bubbling.

11. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.

Feel free to mix cheese types for flavor variation.

Let the dish rest to firm up before serving.
