This cheesy tater tot casserole recipe is a classic comfort food made with ground beef, crispy tater tots, creamy mushroom soup, and melted cheddar cheese. It’s an easy weeknight dinner idea and a kid-friendly meal that reheats perfectly. Perfect for meal prep or a potluck favorite.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 small yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
1 cup sour cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
1 bag (32 oz) frozen tater tots
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned.
2. Add the chopped onion and garlic; cook for 3 more minutes. Drain excess fat.
3. Stir in cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for 2 minutes.
4. Spread the beef mixture evenly into a greased 9×13 baking dish.
5. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the mixture.
6. Arrange frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese.
7. Bake at 375°F for 35–40 minutes until tater tots are golden and crispy.
8. Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese on top and return to oven for 5 more minutes.
9. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
This dish can be prepped a day ahead and baked fresh.
Add chopped jalapeños or bacon bits for extra flavor.
Swap cream of mushroom with cream of chicken if preferred.
