Description
Chicago Style Bakery Apple Slices are a nostalgic Midwestern dessert featuring a soft, cookie-like crust, cinnamon-spiced apples, and a sweet glaze. This comforting recipe is perfect for potlucks, holidays, or cozy weekend baking. Easy to slice and serve, it’s a crowd-pleasing apple dessert bar that’s part pie, part cookie, and totally irresistible.
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for apples)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
2. Add in eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture to form a soft dough.
4. In another bowl, toss thinly sliced apples with 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Let sit while preparing the crust.
5. Divide dough in half. Press one half into a greased 9×13-inch pan.
6. Layer the apples evenly over the bottom crust. Flatten the second dough portion and place on top (it’s okay if it doesn’t cover perfectly).
7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes, until the top is lightly golden and apples are tender.
8. Let cool completely in the pan.
9. In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar with milk to create glaze. Drizzle over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
Notes
This recipe makes 12 to 16 slices, depending on size.
For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of lemon juice to the apples.
