Description

This Chow Mein with the Best Chow Mein Sauce is a quick, flavorful homemade takeout-style dish made with stir-fried noodles, juicy chicken, crisp vegetables, and a savory, sweet, and sticky chow mein sauce. It’s the perfect 30-minute weeknight dinner and a family favorite Asian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

2 packs chow mein noodles (14 oz total)

1 lb boneless chicken thighs or breast, sliced thin

1 cup shredded carrot

2 cups shredded cabbage

3 cloves garlic, minced

4 green onions, sliced

3 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

2 teaspoons sesame oil

2 teaspoons cornstarch

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper

1/4 cup water or chicken broth

1 tablespoon cooking oil (for stir-frying)

Instructions

1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, brown sugar, white pepper, and water or broth. Set aside.

2. Slice chicken, shred cabbage and carrots, mince garlic, and chop green onions.

3. Heat oil in a large skillet or wok. Add chicken and cook until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

4. In the same skillet, add more oil if needed. Sauté garlic for 30 seconds, then add cabbage and carrots. Cook until tender-crisp.

5. Add chow mein noodles to the skillet and let them crisp slightly before tossing.

6. Return chicken to the skillet. Pour sauce over everything and toss well. Cook 1–2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats all ingredients.

7. Garnish with extra green onions and serve hot.

Notes

This recipe works with shrimp or tofu instead of chicken.

You can use fresh, refrigerated, or dry noodles (just cook them first if dry).

Add red pepper flakes or chili oil for a spicy kick.
