Description
Classic Southern Cornbread is a golden, crispy-edged, moist-in-the-middle bread that pairs perfectly with Southern favorites like chili, greens, or fried chicken. Made with stone-ground yellow cornmeal, buttermilk, and baked in a hot skillet, it’s the best Southern cornbread recipe for any meal or gathering.
Ingredients
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup melted butter or bacon grease
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 425°F and place a cast-iron skillet inside to heat.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then add the buttermilk and melted butter. Stir until well combined.
4. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until just combined.
5. Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven, grease it if needed, and pour in the batter.
6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden on top and a toothpick comes out clean.
7. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Use a cast-iron skillet for the perfect crispy crust.
Do not overmix the batter; a few lumps are okay.
For extra flavor, add a handful of corn kernels or shredded cheese.
