Description

Creamy Delmonico Potatoes are a rich, cheesy, and comforting side dish made with russet potatoes, cream, butter, and sharp cheddar cheese. This classic American potato casserole is perfect for holiday dinners or cozy family meals. It’s easy to prepare, feeds a crowd, and reheats beautifully. Ideal for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Sunday suppers.

Ingredients

4 pounds russet potatoes

2 cups heavy cream

2 tablespoons butter

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup whole milk

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

1. Peel and thinly slice the russet potatoes to about 1/4 inch thickness. A mandoline slicer helps keep slices uniform.

2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.

3. Sprinkle in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute to form a roux.

4. Slowly whisk in the milk and heavy cream, making sure there are no lumps. Simmer until the sauce begins to thicken.

5. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.

6. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the dish and pour half the sauce over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.

7. Top with grated Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

8. Remove the foil and bake an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are fork-tender.

9. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

This dish can be made ahead of time and baked later.

Use Yukon Gold potatoes if you prefer a creamier texture.

Add cooked bacon bits between layers for extra flavor.
