Description
This Easy Sausage and Apple Stuffing is a delicious holiday side dish made with savory Italian sausage, crisp apples, herbs, and toasted bread cubes. Perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or cozy Sunday dinners. A comforting casserole that’s easy to make and feeds a crowd.
Ingredients
8 cups day-old bread cubes
1 pound Italian sausage
2 apples, chopped (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
2 celery stalks, diced
1 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons butter
1 and 1/2 cups chicken broth
2 eggs, beaten
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 300°F and spread bread cubes on a baking sheet. Toast until dry and golden, about 20 minutes. Let cool.
2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until browned and crumbly. Remove and set aside.
3. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté onion, celery, and garlic until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
4. Add chopped apples, thyme, and sage. Cook 3–4 more minutes until apples begin to soften.
5. In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, sausage, and cooked vegetable mixture.
6. Whisk together broth, eggs, salt, and pepper. Pour over the bread mixture and toss gently until well combined.
7. Transfer to a greased 9×13 baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
8. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crisp.
Notes
Let the stuffing sit for 5–10 minutes before serving so it holds together better.
Use a firm apple that won’t break down during baking like Honeycrisp.
To make ahead, assemble the stuffing and refrigerate up to 1 day in advance before baking.
