Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter (for caramel)
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt (for caramel)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons heavy cream (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper.
2. In a bowl, cream 1 cup butter and 1/2 cup sugar until light. Add flour and 1/4 tsp salt. Mix until dough forms.
3. Press dough into pan and bake for 20 minutes until lightly golden. Cool completely.
4. In a saucepan, add condensed milk, 1/2 cup butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and 1/2 tsp salt.
5. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until caramel thickens and turns golden, about 10–15 minutes.
6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour over cooled shortbread and spread evenly. Let set for 30 minutes.
7. Melt chocolate chips in microwave or over double boiler. Stir in cream if using.
8. Spread chocolate over caramel. Chill for 1 hour until firm.
9. Cut into bars and serve!
Notes
For extra flair, sprinkle flaky sea salt over the chocolate before it sets.
You can use dark chocolate if you prefer a richer, less sweet finish.
Always cool each layer fully before adding the next to keep clean layers.
