Description

Patty Melts with Secret Sauce are the ultimate diner-style sandwich made at home, featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, Swiss and cheddar cheese, and a creamy tangy secret sauce. Perfect for weeknight dinners, these classic melts are rich, hearty, and totally satisfying. Keywords: patty melt, secret sauce, diner sandwich, beef sandwich, grilled cheese burger.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 large onion, thinly sliced

1 tbsp butter (for onions)

8 slices rye bread

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 slices cheddar cheese

2 tbsp butter (for grilling)

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1 tbsp ketchup

1 tsp Dijon mustard

2 tsp pickle relish

1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

1. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, and garlic powder to make the secret sauce. Set aside.

2. Heat 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring often, until caramelized (15โ€“20 minutes). Set aside.

3. Form ground beef into 4 thin oval patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

4. In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat, 3โ€“4 minutes per side until fully cooked. Remove and set aside.

5. Spread secret sauce on one side of each bread slice. On 4 slices, layer Swiss cheese, cooked patty, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese. Top with another slice of bread.

6. In a clean skillet, melt remaining butter and grill each sandwich over medium heat until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted (about 2โ€“3 minutes per side).

7. Serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

Patty melts are best served immediately for optimal crunch and melt.

You can swap rye bread for sourdough or Texas toast if preferred.

Make the secret sauce ahead and store in the fridge for up to 1 week.
