Description

This Southern cabbage recipe is a comforting Southern side dish made with tender green cabbage, smoky bacon, and savory broth. Perfect for holiday meals or cozy dinners, this soul food staple is easy, flavorful, and satisfying.


Ingredients

4 cups green cabbage, chopped

6 slices bacon, chopped

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup chicken broth

2 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)


Instructions

1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving the drippings.

2. Add butter to the pot, then add chopped onion. Cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute.

4. Add chopped cabbage, stirring to coat in the butter and onion mixture. Cook for 5 minutes.

5. Pour in chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 25–30 minutes, until cabbage is tender.

6. Return cooked bacon to the pot. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir and cook uncovered for a few more minutes.

7. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

Use green cabbage for the best texture and traditional flavor.

If you want it spicier, feel free to add extra red pepper flakes.
