Description

This Southern comfort on a plate recipe brings together fluffy cornbread, savory sausage, and melted cheese for the ultimate cozy, down-home meal. A true Southern-style casserole, it’s the perfect weeknight dinner or potluck favorite, filled with bold flavors and classic comfort. Great for feeding a crowd and even better the next day!


Ingredients

1 package cornbread mix (or equivalent homemade batter)

1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

2 green onions, sliced

2 large eggs

1 cup milk or buttermilk

4 tablespoons butter, melted

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper


Instructions

1. Brown the sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it into crumbles. Drain and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, prepare the cornbread batter according to package directions. Add 1 egg and some milk or buttermilk to adjust consistency.

3. Pour half of the batter into a buttered baking dish. Top with sausage, shredded cheese, and green onions.

4. Pour the remaining batter over the filling and smooth the top.

5. Bake at 375°F for 25–30 minutes, or until golden and set.

6. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Let the dish rest before slicing so the layers hold together well.

You can add chopped bell peppers or jalapeños for a kick.

If using homemade cornbread, keep the batter slightly thick for best texture.
