Irresistible French Onion Sausage Rolls are flaky, golden puff pastry rolls filled with juicy sausage, caramelized onions, Gruyere cheese, and savory herbs for the perfect appetizer, party snack, or easy comfort food dinner.
Ingredients
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
1 pound sausage meat
2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 large egg, beaten
Instructions
1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium low heat. Add the onions and a small pinch of salt, then cook slowly for 20 to 25 minutes until soft, sweet, and deeply golden. Stir in the garlic and thyme for the last minute, then let the mixture cool completely.
2. In a large bowl, combine the sausage meat, cooled onion mixture, Gruyere, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and remaining salt. Mix until evenly combined.
3. Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the puff pastry sheet. Cut it lengthwise into 2 long strips.
4. Divide the filling into 2 portions and shape each portion into a log down the center of each pastry strip.
5. Brush one long edge of each strip with beaten egg, fold the pastry over the filling, and press to seal. Place seam side down.
6. Chill the filled pastry logs for 10 to 15 minutes so they firm up and slice more cleanly.
7. Cut each log into 4 pieces for a total of 8 sausage rolls. Place them on a lined baking sheet, brush the tops with egg wash, and cut a small slit in each one.
8. Bake at 400°F for 22 to 28 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deeply golden and the filling is cooked through.
9. Rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
These sausage rolls taste best when the onions are cooked low and slow until deeply golden, so do not rush that step.
