Description

The Best Sloppy Joes from Scratch are a quick and comforting ground beef dinner made with tender onions, bell pepper, ketchup, tomato sauce, and classic seasonings, all simmered into a rich homemade sloppy joe filling that is perfect for soft toasted buns.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1 small yellow onion, finely chopped

1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon olive oil

3/4 cup ketchup

1/2 cup tomato sauce

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

4 to 6 hamburger buns

2 tablespoons butter, optional for toasting buns

Instructions

1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

2. Add the ground beef and break it up with a spoon. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease if needed.

3. Stir in the ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until fully combined.

4. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick and glossy.

5. Butter the buns lightly if desired and toast them in a skillet or under the broiler until golden.

6. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the buns and serve warm.

Notes

Toast the buns before serving to help them hold the saucy filling better.

Let the meat mixture simmer until thick so the sandwiches stay hearty instead of runny.

For a deeper flavor, make the filling a few hours ahead and reheat it before serving.
